Is this the best speciality filter coffee around?

Lost Sheep Coffee are a team of authentic coffee enthusiasts who have recently provided Cook, Eat, Repeat! with their The Filter One cafetiere coffee to try. I’ve been drinking it for a few weeks now and I can finally put together a fair review. I drink filter coffee so can’t say whether the pods or roasts are the same as The Filter One, but looking at the quality of everything else from Lost Sheep, I’ll take a punt and say it is!

Coffee Culture at the heart of Lost Sheep Coffee.

Lost Sheep Coffee were formed in 2012 with just a three wheeled micro coffee van in Canterbury high street. A life changing trip to Australia in 2011 inspired Stu and Sarah to bring the Australian coffee culture to Britain, by 2017, Lost Sheep Coffee had moved into their award winning speciality coffee roastery in Whitstable, Kent. A quick visit to their website and you can see exactly how important coffee culture is to the Lost Sheep Coffee team, they have excellent brew guides on how to make the perfect cafetiere coffee as well as on their organic Nespresso pods.

Unboxing - what did our coffee package contain?

Hannah and Richard at Lost Sheep Coffee were amazing to work with! We had a quick chat about what sort of equipment I had at home, I’m not a fan of coffee pods so I was really pleased we could get great cafetiere coffee instead. The box that was delivered is simply superb (check out our video above to see all the bits and pieces), I love how authentic the branding is, you’re clearly not dealing with a big corporate beast. There is a real honesty in how enthusiastic everyone is about their product and how hard they work to help customers.

The pack contained:

  • The Filter One coffee pouch - this is a premium quality, fully recyclable, pouch, with a special filter on the side and an easy seal top. Opening the bag released an aroma was absolutely off the hook!

  • A tasting notes card - this gives an instant insight into everything to do with the beans, where they came from, what flavours should brew in the mug. A really nice touch.

  • A friendly personal note from Hannah on the perfect way to make cafetiere coffee with The Filter One.

  • A really cute tote bag (again check out the video, it’s cool).

Everything turned up super quickly with tracked delivery and the team were really easy to get hold of and chat to.

What is The Filter One speciality filter coffee?

The Filter One cafetiere coffee is made from Red Catuai Peaberries from the Paranaiba region of Brazil. It is processed through natural fermentation. The tasting notes card states that the flavours are rum, sherbet and dark caramel. It also gives a little background to the peaberries, which are the result of a natural mutation inside a coffee cherry and these make up 5-10% of the harvest. A really nice touch is the name of the farmer the beans comes from, a great way of showing how sustainable their supply chain is. They also pay up to four times higher than Fair Trade coffee, which means the farmers really win here.

The ground coffee is fine and you get a decent amount in a pack - I’ve been having a cup a day at least for the last two weeks and I think I’ve still got two weeks worth of coffee left.

How to make the perfect cafetiere coffee:

Below are the instructions on how to make cafetiere coffee according to Hannah from Lost Sheep Coffee. I’ve tried it, it works, it’s amazing!

To make two mugs:

  1. Boil your water and let it cool back slightly from boiling point.

  2. Put 40g of coffee into the cafetiere and then pour 600ml of water on top. Don’t put boiling water straight into the glass as it may shatter.

  3. Stir and then pop the top of the cafetiere on.

  4. Let your filter coffee brew for 3 minutes.

  5. Stir again, replace the plunger and then plunge.

  6. Enjoy that slow cafetiere plunge - it’s the best!

  7. Leave to sit for another 3 minutes

  8. Pour

  9. Find a nice spot in the sun with a great book and enjoy your cafetiere filter coffee from Lost Sheep Coffee!

What makes this sustainable, green, environmentally conscious filter coffee?

Carbon Neutral Coffee:

The compostable Nespresso compatible pods are all produced in a factory which runs off hydro, solar and wind power - making it fully carbon neutral. The pods are manufactured to be 100% compostable, so no aluminium or plastic anywhere in their construction. This will actually make them even greener than your average tea bag, let alone coffee pod!

Coffee hand roasted with care and love:

Lost Sheep Coffee only use speciality coffee beans. This means it is from the top grade coffee in the world and therefore comes from the best coffee farms. The beans are all roasted in small batches, rather than on industrial scales, which means there is a minimal environmental impact compared to bigger and less specialist brands. Finally the coffee farmers are all worked with directly, Lost Sheep Coffee even give the names of the farmers on their website, and they pay up to four times more than the standard Fair Trade coffee prices - so the farmers really benefit from working with Lost Sheep.

All coffee delivered from Lost Sheep Coffee to your door will be packed in resealable 100% recyclable coffee bags. I can attest that they are really high quality and durable, so nothing has been skimped - but unlike most other coffee packaging, it will completely recycle. Which is great.
